In February 1950, the Fujian Provincial People's Government set up a provincial (institutional) provincial supervisory agency, namely the seventh administrative supervisory commissioner's office, in Yongan County. In April of the same year, it was renamed the Yong'an Administrative Inspector's Office. Under the jurisdiction of Sanyuan County, Yongan County, Mingxi County, Qingliu County, Ninghua County, Datian County, Ningyang County, Dehua County (on October 27 of the same year, it was placed under the Jinjiang Special Zone).

In June 1956, the Yong'an Office was revoked. In July, the two counties of Sanyuan and Mingxi merged to form Sanming County, which belongs to Nanping Special Administration. In April 1958, Sanming was established as a heavy industry base, and the Sanming Heavy Industry Construction Committee was established. In April 1964, Sanming County was restored to its original name.

From February to March 1967, the Sanming Army Division was ordered to intervene in the local implementation of the "three branches and two armed forces" mission, and set up a production leadership group responsible for industrial and agricultural production in the Sanming area. In July of the same year, the Fuzhou Military Region Party Committee decided to establish the Sanming Special Zone Military Control Committee.

In October 1968, the Revolutionary Committee of the Sanming Prefecture was established as the leading body for party and government integration, exercising all the functions of the in-situ committee and special agency.

On June 18, 1970, the Provincial Revolutionary Committee decided to place the five counties of Youxi, Shaxian, Jiangle, Taining, and Jianning under the Sanming special district, which was officially included in July. The area of Sanming Prefecture was expanded to 1 city and 10 counties. In December of the same year, the Revolutionary Committee of the Sanming Prefecture was changed to the Sanming Regional Revolutionary Committee.

On March 29, 1978, the Sanming District Revolutionary Committee was renamed the Sanming District Administrative Office, and its jurisdiction remained unchanged.

In April 1983, with the approval of the State Council, the original Sanming City was changed to a provincial city, and the Sanming District Administrative Office was abolished. The city-county management system was implemented, and Sanyuan District, Meilie District, Yong'an County, Ming Xi County, Qingliu County, Ninghua County, Datian County, Youxi County, Sha County, Jiangle County, Taining County, Jianning County, 2 districts and 10 counties. In September 1984, with the approval of the State Council, Yongan County was changed to Yongan City (county-level city). It remained unchanged until 2015.
